Highland Lake, Bridgton

Originally called Crotched Pond, Highland Lake in Bridgton stretches from downtown Bridgton in the south up to the edge of the town of Sweden to the north. It has more than 16 miles of shorefrontage, two coves and numerous islands, which provide a variety of scenery and habitat to explore.

The lake is about four miles long and a mile wide and has 1334 acres of surface area. It has a maximum depth of 50 feet, a mean depth of 20 feet, and a water quality rating of "above average" as determined by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Swimming, angling, water-skiing, sailing, rowing, wildlife watching and general relaxing are all common on the lake in the summer. In the winter, cross-country skiers, icefishermen and snowmobilers all enjoy the lake. It is also the center for many activities during Bridgton's Winter Carnival.

The southern end of Highland Lake is home to the Bridgton town beach and public boat launch. Magnificent views of Mount Washington and the White Mountains are visible from many points on this end of the lake. The outlet to Highland Lake features an old mill dam, Stevens Brook spillway and Pondicherry Park.

The north end of the lake is wilder and opportunities for spotting many forms of birdlife and wildlife are possible. Many camps, cottages, and year round homes populate the shoreline as Highland Lake is one of the most popular with our summer visitors and non-resident homeowners.

For people just visiting the area, there are several B&Bs, motels, housekeeping cottages, rental properties and resorts found at lakeside as well as an 18 hole golf course nearby. Further ameneties include all the conveniences found in the town of Bridgton including retail and gift shopping, a movie theater, two grocery stores, and a new hospital complex.
