Town of Standish
The town of Standish sits at the southern end of Sebago Lake, encompassing the lake's eastern shore to Windham and the western shore to Sebago. The center of town lies west of the lake at the intersection of Rtes. 35 and 25, but also includes the communities of Sebago Lake Station and Steep Falls.
Standish is a vibrant community that offers residents two public libraries (Richville Library on Route 114 and Steep Falls Library on Route 113), three post offices (in Standish, Steep Falls and Sebago Lake Village), an arts center, and a college. It's also an easy commute to Maine's largest city, Portland.
Standish has a public boach launch on Sebago Lake which is open to non-residents as well as residents. The local beach, called Kiwanis Beach, is located on Watchic Lake and is open to the public. Because the Portland Water District draws its water from the southern end of Sebago Lake, much of this area of the lake has restricted use as far as boating and swimming is concerned.
The Standish Recreation Program has a variety of programs and activities for people of all ages. Large community events include the Family Festival in June, Harvest Festival in October and Ice Skating parties during the winter season. Ongoing programs include the After School Recreation Program, Youth Soccer League, Skiing Program and Summer Camp.
The Schoolhouse Arts Center is located in Sebago Lake Village (corner of routes 35 and 114). This non-profit organization is dedicated to arts education and the presentation of the arts and produces plays, musicals, and a variety of other shows throughout the year. Visit their website to find out what's happeneing there durting your visit to Standish.
St. Joseph's College is located on the banks of Sebago Lake in the White's Bridge area of Standish. The college has a pool with generous 'open swim' hours for residents as well as water aerobic and other health and fitness classes. For pool hours and programs, visit Standish Rec's Swimming Programs information page. Also be sure to check out the many other ongoing activities available to the public at St. Joe's.
