With the first full week of January 2023 now in our rear view mirror, it feels like winter is really setting-in, here in the great Sebago Lakes Region in Maine.  We have enjoyed seasonably mild temperatures this season however now the below freezing temperatures are much more common.  A very simple thing that you can do to conserve energy is to make sure that all of the windows in your house are locked, and if you have exterior sliding storm windows/screens, to make sure that your storm windows are adjusted to fully closed if you didn’t do that earlier this winter/fall. We have seen a bit of easing of home heating oil pricing with the average price now in southern Maine being around $390-$400 for 100 gallons of fuel. Setting your home to 68 degrees instead of 70 degrees makes a big difference in how long your home heating gallons will go before needing another fill-up or 100 gallons, and per oil burner experts, it is good to order that next delivery before your oil tank gets to 1/4 full, or just below. This is because oil tanks over time build up and accumulate sediments in the bottom of the tank, and if you let your tank get too low on fuel, when the new delivery arrives the “splashing in” of the new fuel can stir up those sediments in the bottom of your tank and cause trouble with your heating systems.  This is why it is important to have your furnace cleaned along with having your filters changed at least every two years, and doing so annually is prudent if possible. There is good news in that Mortgage rates have actually dropped a bit with no further increases projected  at this time, and this is one of the best times of year to set appointments and go see property.  Why? Because you really do get to “see”property and the full neighborhood for the next couple of months, with no foliage blocking sight lines.
