Casco is located in the heart of the Sebago Lakes Region, just 30 miles from Portland and Freeport and 40 miles from North Conway, NH. Casco’s 36 square miles contain eight lakes and ponds: Pleasant Lake, Parker Pond, Crescent Lake, Panther Pond, Thompson Lake, Sebago Lake, Coffee Pond and Thomas Pond. With all these pristine, clear lakes and ponds, a multitude of business and recreational opportunities present themselves.
Casco’s year round population of 3,500 swells to 15,000 during the summer when local youth summer camps, vacation homes, and seasonal resorts are filled with visitors. Many of the seasonal residents have made Casco their summer home for several generations and many of those eventually choose to make Casco their permanent home.
The local economy is comprised of a wide variety of businesses and activities. Tourism is a primary business focus and in Casco you’ll find two vacation resorts, a golf course, several restaurants, and bed and breakfast facilities. In addition to tourism, local sawmills and retail building products as well as an active construction industry, help fuel the local economy. Casco is also home to many smaller businesses including craft and gift shops, antiques, machine shops, art galleries, and a variety of other retail and service businesses.
The Town of Casco is ideally located for the person who has varied interests. Within an hours’ drive of Casco you can reach the coast of Maine, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Portland International Jetport, and outlet shopping in either Freeport or North Conway, NH. Another major shopping area is just twenty minutes away in North Windham.
Down-hill skiing opportunities at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton and Sunday River in Bethel are but 17 and 40 miles away, respectively. Cross-country skiing is available throughout the community as are snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling. In the warmer months Casco offers the full spectrum of outdoor activities including swimming, fishing, hiking, bicycling, picnicing, and laying about.
Several colleges and technical schools are located within a forty mile radius of Casco including: Bates College, Bowdoin College, University of So. Maine, So. Maine Technical College, Central Maine Technical College, University of New England, and St. Joseph’s College.
Casco’s town government is a Town Meeting form of government with an elected 5 member board of selectmen and a Town Manager. Many community volunteers staff various planning, environmental, and recreational committees. Volunteers are also the backbone of the Town of Casco’s Rescue Unit and Fire Department.
